Writing to me, is simply thinking through my fingers

Writer’s note: Just been swallowed wonderfully in some new beginnings. And it’s also Nanowrimo, so most of you will know that I’ve disappeared into somewhat isolation to concentrate on a new novel. See you in December!

Just wanted to drop off a quick note that yes, I’m still alive. The blog hasn’t been updated in a while, I know, and it’s a combination of being busy at work and doing other writing projects. Just dropping by to tell everyone that yes, I’m alive, and yes, I’m still writing.

With that, back to work I go!

Squee! Several months ago, I contributed some “advice” on how to get past the hardest parts of Nanowrimo. Apparently it was included in the new No Plot, No Problem! that was released recently. Grab it now, especially if you’re a writer who has difficulty convincing yourself to start, much less to finish!

You can find it here at his site.

The first thing she was aware of was the feel of the gentle breeze caressing her cheek.

It was a constant, gentle thing, a cooling wind to blow away the cares of the day. She found herself breathing easily, enjoying the breeze. Each breath she took brought new aromas, opened her senses to more information about this place.

The scent of wildflowers. Of freshly-cut grass. The cleanliness of a river.

A beautiful meadow, she thought to herself, her mind instantly casting back to when she was just five years old, and her parents had taken her and her brother on a family picnic. That one moment, when she was a child, walking in the tall grass.

“Open your eyes, Alice,” the brimstone voice of the demon broke her reverie.

Alice opened her eyes to find herself standing on a small hill, under the shade of a large yew tree. Around them, she could see people about them, frozen in a moment. Some were running after each other. A few were sitting on picnic blankets, sharing food. She even saw a couple kissing passionately, lovers entwined with each other, forgetting the world. Her cheeks turned red and she looked away.

“You may speak, child,” the demon’s voice seemed to unlock Alice’s lips, and she found the questions tumbling out.

“Where is this? What am I doing here? Why is everyone frozen?” Alice found herself hyperventilating, panic rising in her chest for no reason.

“Breathe, child. You are not in danger here. This…” he waited till Alice had taken two deep breaths and released them before he continued, “Is heaven. A place where those who are sinless and those who have done good, are taken to rest. Frozen, in a moment of time, at their happiest.”

“What… what is it that you wish me to do here then?”

“We want you to destroy Heaven,” she looked at him as though he had gone mad.

He grinned, and sat down. Alice could not help but think how absurd it was, that here, in the sunlight, in what was supposed to be one of the holiest places, a demon, complete with horns, cloven feet, and thin tail, was sitting happily on the ground. And looking up to HER as though she was going to do the impossible.

“What?” she blinked and stared at him.

“Corrupt Heaven, Alice. This is the price you will pay.”

“But how?” she took a few steps back from him and held her hands open wide, to emphasise her words.

“I leave that up to you. Let me know when it begins, hmm?” the demon leant against the Yew tree, closed his eyes, and soon began snoring.

Alice did not dare to even think of running away. She had made a bargain, and she would stick with it. The question that arose, of course, was how do you corrupt heaven?

~~~~~~~
Heaven, they say, is a place on earth.
Or that it’s something you work on. I don’t know. And to be honest, I stopped caring a long time ago.
Heaven, to me, is a state of mind. It’s a moment of bliss, a moment of happiness. A moment where everything clicks. When you feel right, and that everything around you is right. A moment that you would want to freeze. So as to remember it forever.
I don’t want to freeze time.
I know I don’t want to die. I have a lot of things to live for. I always had, I’ve just never had the courage to admit it to myself. But that’s beside the point.
I like the idea of Heaven, but I don’t like what you have to do to get there. That separation is painful. And if there is nothing in this life after death, it is also pointless.
Much better to love and appreciate the people around you instead while they are here. Heaven shouldn’t be a place you wait to meet those who’ve gone before. By the time you’ve found out, it’ll be too late.
Heaven should be a place on earth. Or rather, a person on earth.
Moments of happiness. Of life.
I don’t want to leave this plane. I don’t want to leave my friends, my family, my loves. I want to live here. To be here. Eternal happiness is nothing if the people I care about are not there.
Hell, they say, is other people. But I’m willing to be in Hell if my loved ones are in hell. Because my heaven are the people I care about.
And apparently I can care quite a bit.
geminianeyes: Who Needs Sanity (Who Needs Sanity)
Been sick the past few weeks. Last week was the worst; I ended up taking two days of sick leave because I really couldn’t stand it any more. As it turned out, a mix of extra sleep (plenty of it!), modern medicine and just general relaxing with friends did a lot to help me recover. The week after Japan has been an insanely busy one. This wasn’t helped by the fact that my flu got worse after I came home. Still, at least I feel functional now and no more “I want to stay home and curl in my blanket.”
Car also went to the hospital. Mom and dad took him to the paint shop while I was away, and when I got him back, he was gleaming! Sadly, his engine whined at me and he went into the hospital for an emergency top overhaul. I’d been delaying that for months and now I paid the price whoops!
Let’s see… the extender cable on my Superlux HD318F died. As in it’s showing the “you have stressed out the wires and therefore we will not longer work unless you adjust us just right” issue I’ve had with all my other earphones. Yes, yes, I’ll start carrying a bag for my headphones. I can’t stand them dying on me. *flails*
Also, Tabitha, my tablet, has been lagging quite a bit lately. I haven’t cleaned up the apps yet, so that’s on my next to-do list when I get the time. It’s odd that she’d be this slow though, considering her specs. Her battery life is still awesome though. Benefits of keeping her docked with the keyboard (or always “married” as Wind_Goddess says) all the time.
Aiks, that turned into a tech update instead of a life status update. Well, in a lot of ways, my tech updates mirror my life update.
Fitness-wise, I’ve stopped exercises temporarily, mainly because of health. Going to kickstart my planned routine again tomorrow most likely. Depends on whether body feels up to it. My legs were feeling really weak just now at dinner when I was out with Rincredulous and the others.
New routine, if it works, should help with strength training and extending stamina. Basically it’s an alternate day plan with an hour’s run on one day, then a 30 minute Nike+ training session the next day. I’ve completed two sessions so far, and it seems to be working. I fell sick with the flu JUST before my trip, and it was alright while I was in Japan, then got worse when I came back to Malaysia. So I haven’t trained for almost two weeks.
I’m quite glad that I don’t have any runs coming up soon, but it also means that I don’t really have a drive to push myself to train. Did I mention that work is kicking my ass? Because it is.
Speaking of work, on the creative side, I’ll be selling my words at the Comic Art Festival Kuala Lumpur happening next week at the Annexe, Central Market. It’ll be happening from 7-8 June, 2014, 10am to 6pm. Goddess help me and Dimmie. :D We’re operating a booth called ProseACK! and will be at B17. Our friends Milk Tea and Monsters will be next to us at B16, selling an anthology called “How Was Your Day?” by 8 different artists. ;)
Dimmie will be selling a collection of her Vaticanny Palace stories (which, if you like irreverent and funny divinity stories you must get!) while I am hopefully going to compile a series of Chapter 1s and put them up for sale.
In addition, you’ll also be supporting a bunch of youngsters who self-publish their own comics, books and other creative stuff. Stuff that *I* am looking out for include Veleries’ Echo Comic and whatever the heck Maxsterism is going to be doing at B14, and not to mention Maikii at B13!
So clear out that weekend, and check out us out!
CAFKL Promo!
Dimmie and I will be at the Comic Art Festival Kuala Lumpur (aka CAFKL) this June! Come and support us by buying our words! CAFKL will be happening at:
Venue: The Annexe, Central Market
Date: June 7 – June 8, 2014
Time: 10am – 7pm
What will we be selling? As mentioned, we’ll be selling our own original works. What are they?
Dimmie’s going to be putting out an anthology of her stories, called “Tales from the Vaticanny Palace.” These will be based on her Vaticanny series. They’re mainly about this god named Finnegan and his hapless assistant Sedna. This winning combination is a fantastic barrel of laughs and sarcasm. Some of my own favourite stories from this series include the Radio episode, aka welcome to the vaticanny place, which is a fantastic parody of a certain radio show.
You can check out some more interesting snippets here.
As for me, I’ll be publishing a series of chapters called… Chapter 1. These are basically going to be, literally, chapter 1 of stories I’ve written so far. Some of them are probably going to be stuff that was rejected by other anthologies. Some will probably be first person view and so forth. The only thing is that they will all have at least 2 chapters written. If you like the first chapter, there’ll be a link to read the second chapter, and so forth.
Keep an eye out for our stuff, and I hope to see you all there!
This is also going to be a complaints list to my muses.
  • My villains keep changing. First it was a God, then it was the dad, then it was the sister, then the mother, and now it’s the manservant with a hint to it being the God in the end. OI. Make up your minds!
  • Sleep deprivation is the reason why that voyeur dirty old men scene is in the novel. Which I don’t think I’ll remove. It turned out to be a pretty sweet scene. :)
  • The little girl has a proper name now and she is turning out to be very sweet and a really nice child. Though she does tend to be a bit too passive. I’m not sure if she’s ok for a five year old who’s been taken hostage by her nanny.
  • Speaking of nanny, I’m not sure how to write the current villain. On one hand, he’s quite passive. On the other, there seems to be a completely different side of him when he reveals his identity. I’M NOT SURE HOW TO WRITE YOU, HALF-HUMAN LICH.
  • Also liches are cold. Like, literally cold. I wonder if that’s why Daramiri likes Illyra so much, she’s like a walking airconditioner. /is smacked by muse
  • Previous point: Ow
Ok back to writing.
Several years ago, an acquaintance who specialises in military fiction was asked during a book signing, “Why don’t you write about May 13?”
At that moment, May 13 was the big thing. It was the topic every writer should aspire to tackle, because it was such a defining moment in Malaysia’s history. At the moment my acquaintance told us the story, we thought it would have been a natural question.
However, I’ve just realised it’s NOT a natural question, especially not for Malaysian writers. There’s so many things for us to write about beyond May 13 that’s much more interesting. A prevailing view is that a Malaysian book is considered to be a Malaysian book only when it’s Malaysiana. That’s a really bullshit view to have when we have so many writers who are capable of writing more than just “another slice of life” novel.
Where am I going with this? Nowhere, really. Just needed to get this rant out of my head (yes, I’m aware that a lot of what I’ve written is something other writers have espoused before, it just didn’t hit me in the gut till today).
Dear Muses,
Yes, we are excited for the trip. Yes, we were charging all the things. Yes, something woke us up at 5am in the morning after sleeping at 1am.
THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT 5AM IS A GOOD TIME TO START SPECULATING ON THE SEXUAL EVENTS IN CHARACTERS LIVES!
I honestly would have preferred if you’d have waited until a more sane hour. Urgh. Can’t sleep now, so I ended up downloading more of Gantz and packing all my chargers.
[Poetry] Break
Since it seems to be the American Month of Poetry, thought I’d write something. Have never tried this style before. Yes, deliberate miscaps are deliberate. :D Oh yeah, poem was written to the tune of Psycho Pass’ Namai No Nai Kibutsu: http://vimeo.com/59940316
Title: Break.
bREAK.
BRat.
DarkNEss
l0neliness
Despair
Running running running
Against a foe you cannot see
Desperation, the fight to stay alive
A panicked shot, a cornered victim
Scream.
Shout.
Hoarse your throat. A sinister smile in the darkness.
Falling
Blessed, sweet, darkness
Reaching out to the sunlight
I looked up to see the dawn
Then i turned
Without regret
With my own two feet
Walk back into the darkness.
So earlier this week, Matt McCabe ran a week-long smart phone event as a warm-up for Nanowrimo. The premise was simple: Write as much as you can on your phone for the entire week and report your numbers at the end of the day. I started out pretty hard and ended up third; I didn’t write on Saturday as I was out shopping with family in Thailand and Sunday was spent being carsick. XD
The contest did, however, help me learn about some new and interesting tools for smartphones.
If you’re on iOS and you use dropbox, you might want to have a look at Plaintext. It’s a minimalist editor that lets you write and sync your notes to dropbox; a useful feature if you don’t have always-on Internet connection on your mobile device. And if you don’t have a dropbox account, sign up now (this is my dropbox referral link, by the way). I love dropbox, and I think it’s one of the best ways to carry your writing around no matter where you go.
For Android users, there is also Epistle. It’s basically the Android version of Plaintext, and it comes with dropbox integration again. It’s free and very minimalist.
As you can guess though, I’m not using any of these.
I’m using Springpad instead, which is a very powerful note-taking tool. It will run offline if it detects there is no Internet connection (which was what I experienced in Thailand) and gave me a quick and easy way to write my story in a daily format. So I organised my chapters by day and then imported them into my Google Docs file once I was on the computer. Is it a bit cumbersome? Yup. Was it easy? Sure! Was it easier to keep track of? Yes.
I will probably be using Springpad this Nanowrimo to write on the go, with separate notes for different sections, but my primary will still be Google Docs on the office PC, then write on Q10 with the file being backed up to both my secondary hard disk AND Dropbox and when the file gets too big… emailing it to myself.
In case you need to ask, yes I AM one of those people who are PARANOID about losing my novel.
See you on the flip side!
[Below is a conversation I had with my muses. This is pretty much how I'm developing the story for Kunibi, arguing with my muses. :P Red denotes Naoko, the muse who's usually in charge of action scenes and actual story actions. Blue is Sukina, who's usually the one with character ideas and backstory.]
So wait. Instead of her dropping from our world to the next, you want to turn it instead into her moving from one country to another.
She goes into exile, it gives her a reason to be ostracised and she’ll be able to avoid the members of her old mercenary band. What’s not to like?
I won’t have the explosions you promised.
Pfft. Like you cared about them.
They do add wordcount and scenery.
They will also require you to… you know, you are pretty lacking in the “see what makes things when mixed go boom!” department. You’ll need to research that.
Urgh chemicals research. Wait, don’t you dare try put me off track. We would have to rework her entire backstory.
Not as much as you think. You wrote her parents and aunt pretty wildly. The new backstory will fit in better than the one we originally thought of.
This is also pretty different from the dream.
Mreh, details.
… *sigh*
Thank you for appearing in my headspace. Now can I have some names to go along with the faces please? Thank you.
Edited: And right after that they suggest the names themselves! Girls, excellent work.
Tongs usually are.
You don’t say. *snicker*
And you WOULD make the megane chracter the “Little Dark One,” wouldn’t you? *Facepalms
… You know, I’m not sure if I should even pretend this is a letter to you girls.
Awww, you know we love your letters!
Like how I love Claptrap cause I pity him?
… Point.
Mreh.
Well, at least you got something done during your downtime today.
The first part of the novel. Which we weren’t supposed to write.
*Beam*
All you can reply is beam?
Heh. *still beaming*
… I’m out of here.
Well, if you remember the way you write, you always explored the world itself through the eyes of your characters. You’ve not really done a character-driven story before when the limits had already been set.
The idea was to try something new, ladies.
And outlining this way isn’t new? It’s been a long time since you looked at a world from the character’s point of view.
Give it a try. You know writing things down helps you remember better.
Mreh.
Dear ladies
You know, if this is going to be a rather regular thing, I don’t quite mind… as long as it becomes regular. Honestly though, I can see at least 3 different plot holes (well, at least one game-breaking plot hole, and the other two are, admittedly, minor) and we haven’t even begun.
Oh, and have I mentioned that we haven’t begun? Yes, tossing me all these ideas are really lovely, but they aren’t even fully mixed yet, never mind half-baked.
Hello ladies
I presume that it is mainly the ladies who have given me this idea, mainly because this smacks of you girls, especially you, Sukina.
Yes, I know we have been hearing a lot about MMO/Games being turned into anime. As in anime series that are based on the premise of games, ala Tower of Druaga and Sword Art Online, not to mention Ragnorak Online and .hack.
However, that doesn’t mean we should follow them! You do realise just how @Q^@&*#*^$($^@*$ it is to write a game script, much less write a full-fledged story about such a game? And let’s not even go into the capturable dudes.
Yes, darlings, don’t think I missed those hints. Are we writing a MMO or are we writing a visual novel romance? I counted at least three capturable dudes (yes I know that capturable is not a word but otome fans will know what I mean). So let’s run them down, shall we?
There’s the King. A boy-king who’s apparently quite kind, if a bit spoiled and naive. And one who doesn’t really know how to fight, but he does know how to administer. This is who, the typical shounen nice guy? He is cute, but he is also quite blur (no, ladies, we are not patterning him on Roland no matter how much I might want to drop an anvil on the guy. Sukina’s reference: Borderlands 2). So he’s rich, refined, and capable. If an idiot.
Then as usual we have the usual swordsman. This is an elder guy, the king’s bodyguard or some such. Stern, firm and reliable. He’s the one who meets our heroine first and the one who’s like an elder brother to her. He protects her and is also the ladies’ man. Hmm… I might be able to spin him into being a partner for her when she goes on her missions…
And then there’s the older, grizzled army veteran. No, he’s not a capturable guy, I think. He is, however, the general of the armies, someone whom they all look up to for guidance, and he takes care mainly of the army as I mentioned and the outer citadels…
Naoko’s note: Well, there are people who go for much, much older men….
Me: Naoko, he’s 42!
Naoko: Your point being? She IS 22
… I can’t believe we are having this conversation.
Naoko: ^_^
So back to the story, there are three guys so far. Yes, for those who know my tastes, the megane/knowledgeable character is conspiciously missing. I have no idea where he is. I’m not sure if such a person will even appear or if that position is going to be usurped by someone else, like a woman or a Priest who is not a capturable. Yes, if this were a game, you all know who I would aim for and forget about the rest.
So about the world. The world’s pretty decent, I think? I have rough settings in mind, with actual imagery and sensations. And a particular scene I cannot wait to write. Yes, dear muses, if nothing else, that scene where the character gets hurt really bad has plenty of possibilities. Not least because she then kicks up the level of her fighting by THAT much higher.
And that protective spirit.
Oi, are we recycling Camp Nanowrimo?
Sukina: Maybe….
Naoko: *whistles*
Me: …
Found this gem while going through the old Nano Blog:
Ebert: Actually, maybe I can help you. There is nothing you don’t “get” because there is nothing to get. You are the writer. What you write is what is written. It is exactly right because it is exactly what you wrote. If someone else doesn’t think so, fuck ‘em. There is no objective goal, no objective right or wrong. Only the process. Your mind will set itself down in words. Do not criticize. Do not look back at every sentence. Just write. You have no idea where you are headed. Your words will lead you. This above all: Nothing is ever completed until it is started. Start. Don’t look back. If at the end it doesn’t meet your hopes, start again.
Now you know more about your hopes.
Hi Naoko, Kishan and Sukina
I know that the Nanowrimo Dreamwidth journal said to leave things out and eventually you’d wondered back, but going out for coffee and coming back with an idea for NOVEMBER when we haven’t even finished this month’s challenge is a bit much, don’t you think?
